How to choose your filters

Choosing a filter starts with a simple question: do you want a mouthpiece that shapes the end, a filter containing activated charcoal or a reusable component? These products do not serve exactly the same purpose. Material, diameter and length are separate criteria.

Compare three families

FamilyWhat to check
CardboardStrip dimensions, any perforations and the diameter obtained after folding.
Activated charcoalOutside diameter, length, construction and manufacturer’s use instructions.
GlassDimensions, mouthpiece shape, glass condition and cleaning method.

A cardboard tip supports the end and may retain plant fragments. It should not be equated with an activated charcoal filter. A glass mouthpiece does not gain charcoal filtration just because it is sold in a filter category.

Cardboard: a format you shape

RAW Tips made from unbleached cardboard illustrate this family. The strip is folded and rolled; the final diameter depends on preparation. Compare the width, length and folding guides in the product details.

“Slim” does not guarantee that every tip fits every paper or tube. Our cardboard filter guide explains shapes and folds in more detail. Washing a used cardboard tip does not turn it into a reusable accessory.

Activated charcoal: check the exact product

PURIZE XTRA Slim 6 mm, 250 pieces, PURIZE Slim 7 mm, 50 pieces and PURIZE Regular 9 mm, 250 pieces provide three diameter examples. Compare length, pack size and the unit prices shown in the product details too.

In its FAQ, PURIZE recommends using its activated charcoal filters once. Drying or cleaning does not establish that a filter is suitable for another use. Follow the brand’s instructions for the particular product.

The presence of charcoal does not guarantee smoke without harmful substances. A performance claim requires defined tests; diameter or colour alone cannot establish it.

Glass: reusable, with cleaning

The RAW Glass Tip Round 6 × 35 mm separates diameter from length: 6 mm is the diameter and 35 mm is the length. Check the end shape too, which may be round or flattened depending on the product.

Reuse requires suitable cleaning and inspection of the glass. Do not reuse a chipped or cracked mouthpiece. Do not apply a cleaning method intended for a different material without checking compatibility. Ceramic components in some charcoal filters do not make those filters reusable.

Read diameter and length separately

The outside diameter helps determine the format. The length determines the space taken up by the mouthpiece. Draw also depends on the filter’s interior, its condition and the way the assembly is prepared: a larger diameter alone does not guarantee a more open draw.

When comparing two packs, check piece count and price per piece, then account for maintenance if considering glass. A price difference may reflect material or function rather than a simple quality difference.

Make your choice in practice

  • Identify the function you need first.
  • Read the exact product’s diameter and length.
  • Check the format of the paper or tube being used.
  • Separate single use from reuse with cleaning.
  • Consider pack cost and cleaning requirements.

See the filter catalog for current specifications. Labels such as “anti-tar” or “flavoured” do not establish reduced risk by themselves. Choosing a filter does not make inhaling smoke risk-free.
