Drying

Drying is one of the most important stages after harvesting hemp. It consists of gradually reducing the moisture contained in the flowers in order to prepare them for storage, curing and the various stages of processing or sale.

Once the plant has been harvested, the flowers still contain a significant amount of water. Without suitable drying, they can deteriorate quickly or develop problems related to excessive moisture. Conversely, drying too quickly can affect certain characteristics of the final product.

An essential stage after harvesting

Drying generally begins immediately after harvesting. The flowers are placed in a controlled environment to allow the water contained in the plant tissues to evaporate gradually.

This phase prepares the flowers for future storage and forms the basis of the post-harvest work carried out by producers.

Temperature and humidity

Drying quality depends heavily on environmental conditions. Temperature, relative humidity and air circulation directly influence the rate at which the flowers lose their water.

Producers generally aim to maintain stable conditions in order to achieve a consistent result and limit variations between different flowers from the same harvest.

Preserving the flower's characteristics

Drying is not only used to remove water. It also helps preserve cannabinoids, terpenes and the flowers' overall profile. How this stage is carried out can affect the appearance, texture, aromas and storage life of the final product.

For this reason, drying is often considered just as important as certain stages of cultivation itself.

The link with curing

After drying, the flowers are generally moved to a curing phase. While drying mainly aims to reduce moisture, curing allows the product to continue maturing and stabilising.

These two stages complement each other and play a major role in the final quality of hemp flowers.
