How to choose a grinder

A grinder breaks up dry plant material. Start with the amount you prepare, the space available and how you handle the tool. A larger or more expensive model will not automatically suit those needs better.

Choose the compartments you need

A two-piece grinder combines grinding and collection in one chamber. A three-piece model usually adds a compartment for the ground material. In a four-piece design, a screen typically separates fine particles into a lower compartment.

This is often called a “pollen catcher” in listings. It collects detached trichomes among other particles, rather than botanical pollen. Check the actual construction: counting pieces does not describe every function of a model.

Compare diameter and grip together

The outside diameter indicates how much space the grinder takes up, not an exact capacity in grams. Height, chamber and teeth affect usable volume. A small model travels easily, but some hands may find it less comfortable to hold.

Examine the material and finish

Distinguish the body from its coating. A metal grinder may be anodised, painted or coated, with different care requirements. A flaking finish or damaged teeth deserve attention; the metal’s name alone does not guarantee quality.

Check rotation, teeth and closure

Consider cleaning before buying
