Clean a grinder according to its material and coating

Start with a soft brush, check the manufacturer’s instructions and choose cleaning methods that suit your grinder’s parts and finish.

Identify the parts you can clean

Before starting, check the material, coating and removable parts. Metal does not mean that paint, seals, magnets and printed markings all tolerate the same treatment. Read the instructions for the model. If none are available, start with dry cleaning and avoid improvised liquid baths.

Open the grinder over a clean surface. Unscrew only the compartments designed to come apart and set small pieces aside. Do not force glued parts or push out a magnet. A two-piece grinder mainly needs attention around its teeth; a model with a screen also needs care around that delicate mesh.

First pass: dry and gentle

Remove accessible residue using a soft, dry brush. Work gently between the teeth, around the threads and along the edges, then wipe with a suitable cloth. Light tapping can loosen material; hitting the grinder against a hard surface can damage parts.

Do not scrape a coating with a blade or a metal point. Avoid pressure on the screen or movements that stretch the mesh. If the grinder moves freely again after this pass, a bath may be unnecessary. Frequent light cleaning is easier to control than an extensive treatment of old deposits.

Metal: check the finish too

Use a liquid on a metal grinder only when the manufacturer allows it for the parts concerned. Follow its guidance on the product, contact time, rinsing and drying. Isopropyl alcohol is not a recommendation for every aluminium grinder or every decorative finish.

SLX says its coating resists isopropyl alcohol and acetone, while noting that harsh solvents can discolour the logo. Its care instructions recommend a soft brush and prohibit metal scraping of the coating. These instructions apply to SLX models; they do not establish the properties of another grinder.

Plastic, hemp composites and wood

For a plastic or hemp composite model, do not infer resistance from another material. The absence of metal does not make an alcohol bath or very hot water suitable. Without specific instructions, stick to a dry brush; use a slightly damp cloth only when the permitted care allows it.

Do not immerse wood without explicit manufacturer instructions. Wipe gently and keep mechanisms dry. A dishwasher is not a default cleaning method. Freezing is not a universal method either: it does not replace the instructions or a check of the parts and coating.

Drying, reassembly and cleaning products

After any permitted wet cleaning, let all parts dry completely before reassembling and closing the grinder. Check the screen, teeth and threads. A bent part or flaking coating calls for a check of the equipment, rather than more solvent.

Cleaners sold for other accessories are not automatically compatible with your grinder. Check the permitted materials and label instructions. For a flammable product, keep flames away and follow the manufacturer’s precautions. The links below help you compare models and distinguish grinder maintenance from bong cleaning.
