Feminized seed
A cannabis seed selected to produce predominantly female plants when cultivated.
What is a feminized seed?
A feminized seed is a cannabis seed selected to produce almost exclusively female plants. It is used when the goal is to obtain plants capable of developing flowers without having to identify and remove male plants during cultivation.
Why use feminized seeds?
Female plants are sought after for their ability to produce flowers containing cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds naturally present in cannabis. Male plants mainly produce pollen and are generally separated from female plants in many cultivation methods.
Feminized seeds considerably reduce the risk of obtaining male plants. They therefore provide more predictable cultivation and make it easier to manage the available space.
Feminized seeds and other types of seeds
Feminized seeds are one of the main categories of cannabis seeds. They differ from regular seeds, which can produce male or female plants, as well as from autoflowering seeds, which have specific flowering characteristics.
The choice between these different categories depends on the grower’s objectives, cultivation conditions and the characteristics sought for the variety being cultivated.
