Trim

Trim refers to the collection of small leaves, plant fragments and residues removed from hemp flowers during manicuring, meaning the trimming stage carried out after harvesting. This process improves the appearance of the flowers by removing excess plant material while preserving the inflorescences intended for sale.

Trim mainly consists of small leaves located around the flowers, often called sugar leaves, which may be accompanied by varying amounts of trichomes and other plant material. Its composition depends directly on the cultivation method, the quality of the harvest and the care taken during manicuring.

How trim is produced

After harvesting, the flowers are generally trimmed to remove leaves that extend beyond the buds. This manicuring can be carried out by hand or with machines specially designed for this operation.

Depending on the producer, trimming may be carried out on fresh flowers (wet trim) or after drying (dry trim). Each method slightly affects the final appearance of the flowers and the composition of the resulting trim.

A highly variable composition

Trim is primarily made up of small leaves, but it may also contain trichomes, cannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds naturally present on the flowers.

The quality of the trim depends in particular on the genetics grown, trichome density, the precision of the manicuring, the harvesting stage and the drying methods used. Some trim consists mainly of plant material, while other trim has a higher resin concentration.

A valued raw material

Trim is often reused as a raw material in various processing methods. It can notably be used for sifting, certain extraction methods or the production of various hemp-derived products.

The possibilities for valorisation depend mainly on the quality of the trim, its trichome content and the manufacturing processes used by the producer.

Although it is removed when preparing the flowers, trim plays an important role in the hemp industry. Its composition, quality and potential for further processing make it a sought-after raw material for many applications, contributing to better utilisation of the plant as a whole.
