The cardboard filter, also known as a roach or tip, forms the mouthpiece placed at the end of a rolling paper. This small component makes rolling easier, keeps the opening in shape and makes use more comfortable.

Its thickness, width and fold directly influence the resulting diameter and airflow. A suitable piece of card should retain its shape without making the mouthpiece too rigid, too tight or disproportionate.

A cardboard filter is not a filter in the strict sense. It is primarily used as a mouthpiece and should not be confused with a cellulose or activated carbon filter designed to retain some of the particles present in smoke.

What is a cardboard filter used for?

Card provides structure at the end of the roll. It helps maintain a regular shape during preparation and limits the mouthpiece being crushed between the fingers or lips.

It serves several practical functions:

  • forming a stable base around which to place the paper;
  • maintaining a regular opening for airflow;
  • preventing small fragments from reaching the mouth;
  • keeping the lips away from the contents;
  • making it easier to use the part close to the mouthpiece;
  • defining the diameter and, in part, the shape of the roll.

However, the filter cannot compensate for rolling that is excessively tight. If the contents are packed too firmly in front of the mouthpiece, airflow will remain difficult, even with correctly folded card.

Which card size should you choose?

Cardboard filters are sold as booklets of detachable strips, pre-cut sheets or rolls to cut to size. Some have perforations that make it easier to create the first folds.

Width

The width of the strip corresponds to the length of the mouthpiece once the filter has been rolled. A narrow strip produces a short, discreet mouthpiece. A wider strip provides more support and keeps the lips further from the contents, but also takes up more space in the paper.

The right choice mainly depends on the width of the paper, the desired diameter and your rolling habits. The card should not extend beyond the paper or be so short that it becomes difficult to keep in place.

Length

The length of the card mainly determines the final diameter. The longer the strip, the more turns it can make around the central fold. A card that is too long forms a bulky mouthpiece, while one that is too short may unravel or lack rigidity.

You can shorten a strip that is too long with a clean cut. Avoid tearing it unevenly, as a damaged edge can make rolling more difficult and create an extra layer.

Thickness and rigidity

The card should be flexible enough to roll without breaking, but rigid enough to retain its shape. Paper that is too thin absorbs moisture more easily and may collapse. Very thick card resists folding and tends to unravel.

Cards designed for rolling generally offer a suitable compromise. If you use another type of paper, choose a clean, unprinted material without a glossy coating, glue, ink or treatment that could be heated.

Perforated or non-perforated card

Perforations act as guides for creating an accordion fold before rolling the rest of the strip. They make the result more regular, particularly when you are starting out.

Card without perforations offers more freedom to adjust the size of the central pattern. It simply requires a little more precision to produce folds of a similar width.

The main folds

The pattern placed in the centre prevents the filter from closing completely and limits the passage of fragments. There is no need to create a complex shape: a few regular folds are enough to obtain a functional mouthpiece.

Accordion fold

Fold a small section of the end in one direction, then in the other, repeating the movement two or three times. Then roll the remaining section around this accordion.

This fold is quick and suitable for most sizes. Take care not to make the folds too wide, as this would significantly increase the filter’s diameter.

M or W fold

The principle is similar to the accordion fold, but the folds are arranged to form an M or W visually in the centre. The difference between the two names mainly depends on the direction from which the filter is viewed.

This shape creates several air passages and helps keep the centre open. It is particularly easy to reproduce with perforated card.

Spiral fold

The card is simply rolled around itself, without a central accordion. This method is quick, but the spiral can tighten and leave a relatively large central opening. It therefore holds small fragments less effectively if the roll is not very compact near the mouthpiece.

More elaborate shapes

It is possible to create more complex patterns, but their benefit is mainly visual. They require a sufficiently long piece of card and very precise folds. An accumulation of layers in the centre can unnecessarily reduce airflow.

For everyday use, an accordion or M fold generally offers the best balance between simplicity, support and airflow.

How to prepare a cardboard filter

  1. Choose the desired diameter. Compare the width of the card with that of the paper and shorten it if necessary.
  2. Form the centre. Make two or three small, regular folds at one end.
  3. Roll the card. Roll the remaining section around the central pattern without crushing it.
  4. Release the pressure slightly. The card can relax a little so that it sits better against the paper.
  5. Place it at the end. Align its edge with that of the paper before distributing the contents.
  6. Roll without tightening too much. Keep the filter in place while maintaining regular airflow.

Practical tip: if the card tends to unravel, roll it once in the opposite direction to its natural curve. Then turn it back the right way before creating the central fold.

Adapting the filter to the type of roll

The diameter of the mouthpiece influences the overall shape. A thin filter is suitable for a narrow roll, while a wider mouthpiece makes a conical shape easier. However, simply increasing the diameter of the card is not enough: the contents must be distributed consistently along the entire length.

For a small format, use a short strip or remove part of the card to avoid excessive overlap. For a wider paper, a longer or slightly more rigid piece of card provides greater stability.

If you roll in a cone shape, place the filter at the narrower end and give it the desired diameter from the outset. It will then serve as a reference point for angling the paper while rolling.

Common mistakes

Tightening the card too much

A very compact filter does not guarantee better support. It can reduce airflow and make rolling difficult. Roll the card firmly, but do not crush the central pattern.

Choosing an unsuitable diameter

A mouthpiece that is too wide in relation to the amount of contents creates an irregular shape. Conversely, a very thin filter in a large paper may lack stability. Prepare the mouthpiece according to the complete format rather than separately.

Leaving a gap in front of the filter

A gap between the card and the contents weakens the connection and can cause uneven burning near the mouthpiece. Distribute the contents up to the edge of the filter without packing them too tightly.

Letting the card protrude

The outer edge of the filter should be aligned with that of the paper. If it protrudes, it may move or interfere with closing. If it is placed too far inside, part of the paper remains empty and may soften on contact with the lips.

Using printed or treated card

Pieces cut from packaging, cards or leaflets may contain inks, glues and coatings whose composition is not intended for this use. Prefer cards specifically designed as rolling mouthpieces, which are clean and unprinted.

Card, cellulose or activated carbon: what is the difference?

Card forms a mechanical mouthpiece. It keeps the roll open, but is not designed to filter smoke. Cellulose filters have a fibrous structure, while activated carbon models contain an adsorbent material. Their diameter, draw resistance and behaviour in the presence of moisture differ from those of card.

The choice between these solutions therefore does not depend solely on their shape. If your priority is filtration rather than maintaining the roll, compare the properties of actual filters instead of considering card an equivalent.

The presence of a cardboard filter does not make smoke risk-free. Combustion produces harmful substances, regardless of the shape of the mouthpiece used. Avoiding combustion remains the most direct way not to inhale its products.

Storing cardboard filters

Keep the card in its booklet or in a clean box, away from moisture. Damp card deforms more easily, loses its rigidity and may transfer an unwanted odour.

Also avoid leaving it loose in a pocket or bag, where it may become dirty, creased or come into contact with liquids. Clean, dry and intact card folds more evenly and stays in place better.
