A hybrid variety is a plant obtained by crossing two or more distinct genetic lines. In cannabis and hemp, the vast majority of modern varieties are now considered hybrids, as they result from numerous selections and crosses made over successive generations.

What is a hybrid variety?

The term hybrid refers to a plant whose genetic makeup comes from several different lines. Growers make these crosses to combine certain characteristics considered desirable, such as growth vigour, disease resistance, aromatic profile or flowering time.

Over time, successive crosses have made the distinction between certain historical lines increasingly complex. Many current varieties therefore have particularly diverse genetic heritage.

Why create hybrids?

Crosses make it possible to combine traits from several plants. A hybrid variety can therefore bring together different qualities sought by growers or breeders.

Stabilising genetics

After a cross, several generations of selection may be required to obtain a variety with more uniform and predictable characteristics.

The creation of hybrids is behind a large proportion of the modern varieties available today. It makes it possible to expand genetic diversity and explore new aromatic profiles.

Hybrid, Indica and Sativa

The terms Indica, Sativa and Hybrid are frequently used to describe the genetic origins of a variety. However, most modern cultivars are in fact hybrids containing varying degrees of heritage from several lines.

It is therefore common to see varieties described as “Indica-dominant” or “Sativa-dominant” while remaining genetically hybrid.

Genetic selection plays a central role in the development of hybrids. Breeders choose the most interesting plants in each generation to preserve certain characteristics and improve the stability of the resulting variety.
