Hydroponics
Hydroponics is a growing method in which plants develop without traditional soil. The roots receive the water and nutrients they need for growth directly.
Hydroponics is a growing technique that enables plants to be cultivated without using soil. The roots are placed in a nutrient solution or in an inert substrate capable of retaining water and nutrients. This method is used in many agricultural and horticultural sectors and in some hemp cultivation.
What is hydroponics?
The term hydroponics refers to a set of techniques based on the controlled delivery of water and nutrients directly to plant roots. Unlike traditional cultivation in soil, the plant does not rely on the soil’s natural fertility to obtain the elements needed for its development.
How does hydroponic cultivation work?
In a hydroponic system, the roots are supplied with a solution containing water and nutrients. Depending on the system used, the roots may be immersed, irrigated regularly or kept in an inert substrate such as rock wool, clay pebbles or coco fibre.
What are the main hydroponic systems?
There are several hydroponic methods, such as drip irrigation, the NFT system (Nutrient Film Technique), deep-water culture and ebb-and-flow systems. Each method has its own characteristics in terms of water circulation, oxygenation and nutrient management.
Hydroponics in hemp cultivation
Hydroponics is sometimes used to grow hemp indoors or in greenhouses. This method enables precise control of irrigation, nutrition and certain growing parameters. However, the results depend on many factors, including genetics, the environment and system management.
Hydroponics and other growing methods
Hydroponics differs from soil cultivation and approaches such as Living Soil. Whereas soil cultivation relies on the soil’s natural ecosystem, hydroponics is based primarily on controlling water and nutrient inputs. Each method has its own characteristics and technical requirements.
A widely used growing method
Thanks to its flexibility and precise control of growing parameters, hydroponics is now used in many forms of plant production. It is one of the main modern growing techniques alongside soil and greenhouse cultivation and other specialised systems.
