CBN

CBN, or cannabinol, is a cannabinoid naturally present in hemp. It is one of the many molecules produced by the plant alongside CBD, CBG, CBC and THC. Unlike some more abundant cannabinoids, CBN is generally present in limited quantities in freshly harvested flowers and becomes more visible as certain compounds naturally change over time.

How is CBN formed?

CBN is mainly associated with the gradual transformation of THC. When a flower, resin or extract is exposed to oxygen, light or heat for an extended period, some of the THC may degrade and contribute to the formation of cannabinol. This change is a natural phenomenon that forms part of the chemical ageing of the cannabinoids present in hemp.

What is the difference between CBN, CBD and THC?

CBN, CBD and THC are three distinct cannabinoids. CBD is often sought for its significant presence in CBD hemp varieties, while THC is primarily known for its psychoactive nature when present at high concentrations. CBN, meanwhile, is considered a minor cannabinoid, generally present in smaller quantities and often resulting from the natural evolution of other molecules.

CBN in laboratory analyses

Laboratories specialising in hemp analysis regularly measure the CBN content present in flowers, resins, oils and extracts. This data provides a more complete view of a product’s cannabinoid profile. The presence of CBN may also provide certain indications of the storage conditions, age or natural evolution of the plant material analysed.

CBN in full-spectrum products

CBN is frequently mentioned in products described as Full Spectrum or full-spectrum products. In this type of formulation, several cannabinoids and terpenes are kept together in order to preserve a composition close to that of the original plant. CBN then contributes to the natural diversity of the cannabinoid profile without necessarily being present at a high concentration.

An increasingly well-known molecule

With the development of detailed analyses and growing interest in the different cannabinoids in hemp, CBN has become one of the best-known minor cannabinoids. It is now one of the compounds regularly studied to better understand the chemical richness of hemp and the interactions between the different molecules naturally produced by the plant.
