MCT oil
MCT oil is a plant-based oil, often derived from coconut, used as a carrier oil in many CBD oils to dilute cannabinoids and make them easier to use.
MCT oil is a plant-based oil composed mainly of medium-chain triglycerides. It is generally obtained from coconut oil, more rarely from palm kernel oil, and then purified to retain only certain medium-chain fatty acids.
In the hemp sector, MCT oil is mainly used as a carrier oil for CBD extracts and other cannabinoids. Its subtle taste, fluid texture and good stability make it one of the most widely used bases for producing CBD oils.
Why use MCT oil?
Cannabinoids such as CBD are not soluble in water but are soluble in fats. They therefore need to be mixed with an oil to obtain a homogeneous product that is easy to dose and pleasant to use. MCT oil fulfils this role particularly well thanks to its fluidity and neutrality.
Depending on the manufacturer, it may be used on its own or combined with other plant-based oils to achieve specific characteristics in terms of texture, taste or formulation.
MCT oil or hemp oil?
MCT oil should not be confused with hemp oil. MCT oil is mainly used as a carrier for cannabinoids, whereas hemp oil is obtained from hemp seeds and naturally has its own nutritional composition. Both may be used as a base for CBD oil, depending on the manufacturer’s choices.
A widely used base
Today, many CBD oils use an MCT oil base because of its stability, neutral taste and ease of use. Other carrier oils also exist, such as hemp oil, olive oil or other plant-based oils, each with different characteristics.
