Cannabinoid acid
Natural precursor form of a cannabinoid, produced by the plant before certain chemical transformations.
A cannabinoid acid is the natural form in which many cannabinoids are produced by hemp and cannabis. These molecules are present in the living plant before undergoing certain chemical transformations over time or under the influence of factors such as heat.
For example, CBDA is the acidic form of CBD, while THCA is the acidic form of THC. Similarly, other cannabinoids also exist in acidic form before being transformed.
Presence in the plant
Cannabinoids are mainly synthesised in acidic form in the plant’s trichomes. This form is considered the natural state of many cannabinoids before they evolve into other compounds.
Transformation of cannabinoid acids
When exposed to certain conditions, particularly heat, cannabinoid acids may lose a carboxyl group through a process called decarboxylation. This transformation alters their chemical structure and gives rise to other cannabinoids such as CBD or THC.
A family of molecules
The best-known cannabinoid acids include CBDA, THCA, CBGA and CBCA. These compounds are an integral part of the natural composition of hemp and cannabis.
