THCA
Natural acidic form of THC found in hemp and cannabis before decarboxylation.
THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is one of the main cannabinoids naturally produced by hemp and cannabis. It is the acidic precursor form of THC and is present in large quantities in fresh flowers before certain natural processes or heat-induced transformations.
In the living plant, THCA is synthesised in the trichomes from CBGA, often considered the common precursor cannabinoid to several cannabinoid families. As the plant develops, part of the CBGA is converted into THCA through specific enzymes.
THCA is particularly abundant in certain cannabis varieties. When the plant is freshly harvested, much of its potential THC is still present in the form of THCA rather than THC.
The relationship between THCA and THC
THCA is the direct precursor to THC. When the molecule is exposed to a sufficient temperature or certain ageing conditions, it naturally loses a carboxyl group through a process called decarboxylation. This transformation alters its chemical structure and leads to the formation of THC.
Decarboxylation can occur during drying, ageing, combustion, vaporisation or certain extraction processes. The rate of transformation depends in particular on the temperature, exposure time and storage conditions.
Production in the trichomes
Like many other cannabinoids, THCA is produced mainly in the trichomes covering hemp and cannabis flowers. These microscopic structures are responsible for synthesising and storing many of the plant’s natural compounds, including cannabinoids and terpenes.
The THCA concentration varies according to genetics, growing conditions, light exposure, harvesting stage and the processing methods applied after harvest.
Presence in analyses
THCA frequently appears in analysis reports for flowers, resins and extracts. Laboratories may measure THCA and THC separately to provide a more precise picture of the composition of the product analysed.
This distinction is important because THCA and THC are two different molecules, even though they are closely related through their chemical structure and natural evolution within the plant.

THCA is one of the cannabinoids most studied in research dedicated to hemp and cannabis. Its role in cannabinoid biosynthesis, as well as its transformation into THC, makes it central to understanding the plant’s complex chemistry.
