CBD extract
A CBD extract is a preparation obtained from hemp to concentrate cannabidiol and, depending on the method used, other natural compounds such as cannabinoids, terpenes or flavonoids.
A CBD extract is a product obtained from hemp using various extraction methods to recover and concentrate certain compounds naturally present in the plant. It mainly contains cannabidiol (CBD), but may also retain other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids or various plant constituents, depending on the process used.
How is a CBD extract obtained?
The production of a CBD extract begins with the selection of a hemp-derived raw material. Different techniques can then be used to isolate the desired compounds. The best-known methods include CO₂ extraction, certain solvent-based extraction methods and other processes for recovering the cannabinoids present in the plant.
What does a CBD extract contain?
The composition of an extract depends directly on the manufacturing method and the desired level of purification. Some extracts retain a large proportion of the compounds naturally present in hemp, while others are more highly refined to achieve a higher CBD concentration. They may therefore contain cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids or other plant constituents in varying proportions.
The different types of CBD extracts
There are several categories of CBD extracts. So-called Full Spectrum extracts retain a broad range of compounds naturally present in hemp. Broad Spectrum extracts also contain several cannabinoids and terpenes, but with certain differences in composition. Highly purified extracts can, in turn, be used to produce isolates containing mainly a single molecule.
What is the difference between an extract, a concentrate and an isolate?
An extract is obtained using a specific extraction method. A concentrate is a broader term for a product enriched with certain hemp compounds. An isolate is a highly purified form of a particular molecule, such as CBD. These terms are related, but do not describe exactly the same type of product.
Using CBD extracts
CBD extracts serve as a base for many hemp products. They may be used to make oils, resins, cosmetics, infusions, vaping products or other specialised formulations. Their development has contributed to the emergence of a wide range of products suited to different uses and preferences.
