Isolate

An isolate is a product obtained after several purification steps designed to isolate a single molecule present in hemp. In the cannabis and CBD industry, the term mainly refers to a highly purified cannabinoid, such as CBD, CBG or CBN. Unlike Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum extracts, an isolate does not seek to preserve the plant’s natural diversity of compounds, but to obtain a single substance with a very high level of purity.

Isolates currently play an important role in the hemp industry. Their precisely controlled composition makes them a widely used raw material in the manufacture of numerous products requiring accurate dosing of a specific cannabinoid.

How is an isolate obtained?

The production of an isolate generally begins with a hemp extract obtained through a suitable extraction process. This extract then undergoes several successive filtration, purification and separation steps to gradually remove other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, plant waxes and the various compounds naturally present in the plant.

After these operations, mainly a single molecule remains, obtained in the form of a crystalline powder or highly purified material.

The different cannabinoid isolates

The best known is CBD isolate, but CBG, CBN and other isolates of cannabinoids naturally produced by hemp also exist. Advances in purification techniques now make it possible to achieve particularly high levels of purity.

Each isolate mainly contains a single cannabinoid, making it possible to work with a simple and precisely identified composition.

Isolate, distillate and extract

Although these terms are often associated, they do not refer to the same level of processing. An extract generally retains several hemp compounds. A distillate is an extract that has undergone additional purification steps, but may still contain several cannabinoids. An isolate, on the other hand, aims to retain only a single, highly purified molecule.

These three categories serve different manufacturing purposes and have distinct compositions.

A widely used raw material

Isolates are used in many hemp-based formulations. They are found in certain CBD oils, cosmetics, e-liquids, technical products and various specialised preparations requiring a precisely controlled concentration of a cannabinoid.

Their high purity makes it easier to formulate products and control the final composition of the manufactured products.

Advances in purification techniques

The development of isolates illustrates the progress made in modern hemp extraction and purification methods. Today, they complement Full Spectrum and Broad Spectrum extracts and distillates, offering another approach to the use of cannabinoids naturally produced by the plant.
