Living Soil

Living Soil, or living soil, is a cultivation approach that involves maintaining biologically active soil rich in microorganisms and organic matter. Rather than supplying nutrients directly to plants, this method seeks to encourage the soil’s natural functioning so that it gradually provides the resources needed for crop development.

In a Living Soil system, the soil is regarded as a genuine ecosystem. Bacteria, fungi, earthworms, microfauna and other organisms constantly interact to break down organic matter, recycle nutrients and contribute to the biological balance of the environment.

How Living Soil works

Living Soil cultivation is based on creating and maintaining balanced soil. Growers generally use compost, organic amendments, mulch and various natural materials to nourish microbial life rather than the plant directly.

Over time, the organisms present in the soil transform organic matter into elements that can be absorbed by the roots. This approach therefore relies on natural biological processes rather than immediately available nutrient inputs.

A different approach from other cultivation methods

Unlike certain cultivation methods in which nutrition is mainly supplied in the form of fertiliser solutions, Living Soil seeks to maintain an ecosystem capable of managing some of the nutrient exchanges itself.

Living Soil in hemp cultivation

Living Soil is used by some hemp producers, particularly for growing CBD flowers. This approach can be implemented Outdoor, in a Greenhouse or even Indoor, provided that biologically active soil is maintained.
