Kief

Kief is a product consisting primarily of trichomes mechanically separated from hemp flowers. These tiny resin glands naturally contain cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other compounds produced by the plant. Once detached from the plant material, the trichomes form a fine powder whose colour generally ranges from light beige to golden or even amber, depending on the variety, flower maturity and sieving quality.

Kief is one of the simplest forms of mechanically concentrating hemp compounds. It is produced without solvents and serves as the raw material for many traditional resins and concentrates.

The trichomes behind Kief

Trichomes are small resin glands that mainly cover hemp flowers. These structures synthesise and store most of the plant's cannabinoids, terpenes and many other natural compounds.

When trichomes are separated from the plant material, they can be collected as Kief. The higher the proportion of trichomes and the lower the amount of plant material, the purer the product is generally considered to be.

How is Kief obtained?

Kief is most often obtained by mechanically sieving dried hemp flowers. Trichomes, which are more fragile than plant tissue, detach and pass through screens with different mesh sizes, while leaves and other plant fragments remain behind.

This process can be carried out by hand or with specialised equipment. The fineness of the sieving, the quality of the flowers and the care taken during handling directly influence the purity of the final product.

Kief, Pollen and Dry Sift

The terms Kief, Pollen and Dry Sift refer to very similar but slightly different concepts. Kief is the product obtained after separating the trichomes. Dry Sift primarily refers to the production method of dry sieving. The term Pollen, meanwhile, is a historical term used in the hemp trade, although it is not genuine botanical pollen.

In practice, these three terms are often used to refer to similar products composed mainly of trichomes.

A naturally rich composition

Kief mainly contains the constituents naturally present in trichomes. These include various cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, CBC and CBN, as well as terpenes, flavonoids and other plant compounds.

Its composition depends on many factors, including the genetics cultivated, growing conditions, harvesting stage, trichome density and the quality of the sieving process.

A raw material for traditional concentrates

Kief can be used directly or serve as a raw material for making various resins and concentrates, including certain hashes obtained through compression or other mechanical processes.

Because it closely reflects the natural composition of trichomes and its production process uses no solvents, Kief remains one of the most iconic traditional concentrates in the hemp world.
