Sativa
Sativa refers to a historical category of cannabis associated with certain morphological and genetic characteristics.
Sativa is a term historically used to describe certain cannabis lineages with particular botanical characteristics. It is part of the traditional classifications of cannabis, alongside the terms Indica and, more recently, Hybrid. Originally, this distinction was based mainly on plant morphology, geographical origin and growth pattern.
Today, advances in genetic selection have significantly changed these classifications. Most commercially available varieties result from numerous crosses, meaning that the term Sativa is now used more as a genetic or morphological reference than as a strict botanical classification.
Characteristics of Sativa lineages
Plants traditionally classified as Sativa generally show vigorous growth, a more slender structure and more widely spaced internodes than Indica lineages. They often develop long branches and a more open architecture.
They can become quite tall when growing conditions are favourable, which often leads growers to adapt pruning or training techniques in order to control their development.
Generally finer leaves
One of the characteristics most commonly associated with Sativa lineages concerns the shape of their leaves. The leaflets are generally longer, finer and narrower than those observed in Indica lineages.
This morphology is often associated with cannabis populations historically cultivated in tropical or subtropical regions, where climatic conditions differ significantly from those in mountainous areas.
Often a longer flowering period
Genetics traditionally classified as Sativa generally have a longer flowering period than that observed in many Indica lineages. This characteristic directly affects the overall length of the growing cycle.
However, the exact duration depends mainly on the variety, its genetics and the growing conditions used.
Extensively hybridised genetics
After several decades of selection and crossbreeding, entirely Sativa lineages have become relatively rare on the market. Most modern varieties combine genetic backgrounds from different lineages.
Today, producers mainly use the term Sativa to describe genetic dominance or certain growth characteristics inherited from these historical lineages.
The role of varietal selection
Sativa genetics are regularly used in breeding programmes to develop new varieties of hemp or cannabis. They are crossed with other lineages to combine different botanical, agronomic and aromatic characteristics.
These breeding efforts contribute to the wide diversity of varieties available today, whether intended for the production of flowers, seeds or other hemp-derived products.
A term that is still widely used
Although the distinction between Sativa and Indica is less strict today than it once was, these terms remain widely used in the cannabis world. They help describe a variety's genetic origin, certain morphological characteristics or its growth pattern, while keeping in mind that most modern cultivars are now hybrids.
