CBD in Switzerland: Swiss cannabis origin and quality

What does “Swiss CBD” mean on a product page?
A flower grown in Switzerland, an extract made in the country and an oil bottled by a Swiss company describe three different stages. To understand a product’s origin, look at what is actually specified: where the hemp was grown, where it was processed and where it was bottled or packaged. A Swiss business address identifies the company, but is not enough to establish the raw material’s journey.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the cannabinoids in hemp. It does not have the intoxicating effect characteristic of THC. “Swiss cannabis” describes an origin or a production context; the phrase alone tells you neither the product’s CBD content nor its intended use.
Is CBD legal in Switzerland? Understanding the 1% THC threshold
According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH, source in French), cannabis products containing less than 1% THC are not subject to narcotics legislation. At 1%, the content is no longer below the threshold. The CBD percentage does not replace this check.
The product category also matters: different rules apply to a product intended for smoking, a cosmetic, a food or a medicine. The FSVO explains that cannabinoids used in food are classified as novel foods and require the corresponding authorisation (source in French). Labels such as “wellness” or “aromatic product” do not remove the obligation to follow the rules for the actual intended use.

Indoor, greenhouse or outdoor: what cultivation changes
These three terms describe the environment in which flowers are grown. They do not automatically rank their quality.
| Cultivation | Environment | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | Indoors, with controlled light and climate. | Flower consistency, drying and storage. |
| Greenhouse | Under glass, with natural light and protection from the weather. | Humidity management and care during harvest. |
| Outdoor | Outside, following the climate and growing season. | Harvest conditions, sorting and drying. |
A poorly stored indoor flower can lose some of its qualities. Careful outdoor cultivation can, in turn, produce an interesting flower. Work after harvest, particularly drying and subsequent storage, remains important whichever cultivation method is used.
Five things to check before buying CBD in Switzerland
- Product form and intended use. Flowers, resins and oils call for different comparisons. Read the ingredients, directions and warnings.
- The stated origin. Look for specific information about cultivation or manufacture. “Swiss brand” and “hemp grown in Switzerland” provide different information.
- CBD and THC content. Check what the displayed figures refer to. A high CBD percentage alone does not describe aroma, texture or how well a product has been stored.
- Product reference or batch. If an analysis is published for the product, check the sample identification and date. A result for another product does not automatically describe the one you are buying.
- Price for a comparable quantity. For flowers and resins, compare the price per gram at similar pack sizes. For an oil, consider volume and CBD concentration.

Frequently asked questions about Swiss cannabis
Is CBD sold in Switzerland always grown in Switzerland?
The place of sale does not establish where the hemp was grown. Check the stated hemp origin, followed by the information about processing and packaging.
Does a CBD product always contain zero THC?
A CBD product can contain THC while remaining below Switzerland’s 1% threshold. If the absence of THC is a selection criterion, check the information for the specific product.
Is hemp seed oil the same as CBD oil?
Hemp seed oil is obtained from the seeds. CBD oil contains cannabidiol, usually in a carrier oil. The ingredient list tells you which type of product it is.
