Woody notes

Woody notes refer to an aromatic family associated with scents reminiscent of wood, bark, dry branches, plant resin or certain forest-floor notes. In cannabis and hemp, they are part of the descriptions used to characterise a variety’s olfactory profile.

These aromas may evoke cedar, pine, dry wood, forest soil or slightly resinous nuances. Their perception depends on the plant’s genetics, its terpene profile, growing conditions, drying and storage.

A reference point in the aromatic profile

Woody notes are often used alongside other aromatic families such as earthy, spicy, herbal or resinous notes. They help describe the nuances of a flower, hash or extract more precisely, but do not in themselves indicate the product’s potency or exact composition.

Associated terpenes

Certain terpenes may contribute to woody or forest-like impressions, including pinene, caryophyllene, humulene or myrcene, depending on the combinations present. The final aroma nevertheless results from a complex range of natural compounds and does not depend on a single terpene.
