Delta-9 THC
Delta-9 THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. It results from the transformation of THCA under the effect of heat, and its concentration varies depending on the varieties, cultivation methods and products analysed.
Delta-9 THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the best-known naturally occurring cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. It is primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects traditionally associated with cannabis. This molecule is produced in the plant's trichomes in its acidic form, THCA, before being transformed into Delta-9 THC by heat through a process called decarboxylation.
Delta-9 THC is one of the many phytocannabinoids identified in hemp. Its concentration varies considerably depending on the cultivated variety, cultivation methods, environmental conditions and the plant's genetics.
How is Delta-9 THC produced?
In a living hemp plant, Delta-9 THC is present only in small quantities. The plant mainly produces THCA, an acidic cannabinoid that does not have the same properties. When the flowers are heated, for example during vaporisation or combustion, THCA loses a carboxyl group and gradually transforms into Delta-9 THC.
This transformation explains why analyses generally distinguish between THCA and the Delta-9 THC already present in the product.
What role does it play in the plant?
Like other cannabinoids, Delta-9 THC probably contributes to the natural defence mechanisms of cannabis. It is produced in the trichomes, where it is associated with numerous terpenes, flavonoids and other plant compounds. These substances help protect the flowers against certain external threats, such as UV rays, insects and certain micro-organisms.
Delta-9 THC in hemp and cannabis
Delta-9 THC is present in both hemp and cannabis. The main difference lies in its concentration.
Hemp varieties cultivated for CBD are selected to produce very little Delta-9 THC while developing higher levels of cannabidiol (CBD). Conversely, some cannabis varieties are selected to naturally produce much higher concentrations of Delta-9 THC.
Delta-9 THC and regulation
The regulations applicable to Delta-9 THC vary from country to country. In Switzerland, hemp products intended for the legal market must comply with a maximum THC content defined by the legislation in force. Producers generally carry out analyses to verify that crops comply with the requirements before they are marketed.
Not to be confused with other forms of THC
Delta-9 THC is sometimes confused with other cannabinoids bearing a similar name, such as Delta-8 THC, Delta-10 THC or THCA. Although these molecules are chemically similar, they have slightly different structures and do not correspond exactly to the same compound.
