CBGA, or cannabigerolic acid, is a cannabinoid naturally produced by the cannabis plant. It is the precursor of several major cannabinoids, including CBD, THC and CBC.

CBGA, or cannabigerolic acid, is a phytocannabinoid naturally produced by hemp and cannabis. It plays an essential role in the biosynthesis of cannabinoids and is often referred to as the “mother cannabinoid, as it is the direct precursor of several of the main cannabinoids found in the plant.

CBGA is synthesised in the trichomes, the small resin glands that mainly cover the flowers. Unlike CBD or THC, it is primarily an intermediate molecule: as the plant develops, much of the CBGA is gradually converted into other acidic cannabinoids through the action of specific enzymes.

The precursor cannabinoid

CBGA is the starting point for the production of many cannabinoids. Depending on the enzymes present in the plant, it can be converted into CBDA, THCA or CBCA. After decarboxylation, these molecules then give rise to CBD, THC and CBC.

This central position explains why CBGA is considered one of the most important molecules in cannabis biochemistry. Without it, the plant could not produce most of the cannabinoids found in hemp flowers.

Changes during growth

CBGA is generally more abundant during the early stages of flower development. As the plant matures, a significant proportion is used to produce other cannabinoids, leading to a gradual decrease in its concentration.

The amount of CBGA remaining in the flowers at harvest depends in particular on genetics, growing conditions, maturity stage and the characteristics specific to each variety.

Presence in hemp products

Since a large proportion of CBGA is naturally converted before harvest, it is generally present in lower quantities than CBD in finished products. It may nevertheless be found in certain hemp flowers, resins or extracts, depending on the cultivation method and extraction process used.

Laboratory analyses, including certificates of analysis (COAs), make it possible to measure the CBGA content when it is being investigated or declared by the manufacturer.

CBGA in scientific research

CBGA plays an important role in studies of cannabinoid biosynthesis. Its role helps researchers better understand the biological mechanisms that lead to the formation of the various compounds found in cannabis.

Research also focuses on its development over the course of plant growth, the factors influencing its production and the relationships between CBGA and other cannabinoids.

A key element of cannabis biology

Even though it is generally less abundant than other cannabinoids in finished products, CBGA remains a fundamental molecule for understanding how hemp functions. Its role as a precursor explains why it occupies a central place in the study of the plant’s chemistry, genetics and development.
