Flavonoids are a family of plant compounds naturally found in many plants, fruits, vegetables and flowers. Hemp also contains various flavonoids, which contribute to its chemical composition alongside cannabinoids, terpenes and other natural substances produced by the plant.

What are flavonoids?

Flavonoids belong to a broad family of plant molecules found throughout the plant kingdom. They are responsible, in particular, for certain colours observed in flowers, leaves and fruits. Depending on the plant species concerned, they may contribute to the yellow, orange, red, purple or bluish shades visible in nature.

Flavonoids in hemp

Hemp naturally produces several different flavonoids. Some are common to many plants, while others are more closely associated with cannabis and hemp. These compounds are generally present in smaller quantities than cannabinoids, but they contribute to the plant’s overall chemical richness.

What is the difference between flavonoids, cannabinoids and terpenes?

Flavonoids, cannabinoids and terpenes belong to distinct families of molecules. Cannabinoids include, for example, CBD, CBG and CBN. Terpenes are mainly associated with the natural aromas and scents of hemp. Flavonoids, meanwhile, form another category of plant compounds that contributes to the plant’s overall composition.

Where are flavonoids found?

Flavonoids are present in many parts of plants. They are found in particular in flowers, leaves, fruits, vegetables, tea, certain spices and many cultivated or wild plants. Their presence is therefore not specific to hemp, even though this plant also has its own flavonoid profiles.

Flavonoids in hemp-based products

Depending on the processing methods used, some of the flavonoids naturally present in hemp may be preserved in certain extracts, oils, resins or full-spectrum products. Their presence depends in particular on the cultivated variety, the extraction process and the level of purification applied to the final product.
