THC

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of the main cannabinoids naturally found in hemp and cannabis. It is one of the phytocannabinoids produced by the plant and is among the most studied compounds in the world of cannabis.
THC is synthesised in the trichomes, small microscopic structures found mainly on the flowers. Like many cannabinoids, it is not initially produced in its final form. In the living plant, it is first present as THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which is its natural precursor.
From THCA to THC
THC results from the transformation of THCA. This conversion occurs through a process known as decarboxylation, which takes place particularly under the effect of heat, time or certain processing methods.
Before this transformation, much of the plant’s THC potential is still in the form of THCA. This is why laboratories generally distinguish between these two molecules in their analyses.
A major cannabinoid in cannabis
THC is among the most abundant cannabinoids in many cannabis varieties. Its concentration varies according to genetics, growing conditions, light exposure, harvesting and the processing methods used.
Alongside CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC and other cannabinoids, it contributes to the plant’s complex chemical composition. Each variety therefore has its own cannabinoid profile.
Interaction with the endocannabinoid system
THC is studied for its interactions with the endocannabinoid system, a biological network found in humans and many animals. This system includes cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids naturally produced by the body and various enzymes involved in their functioning.
