420: the history and meaning of cannabis’s iconic number
A universal symbol of hemp culture, cannabis 420 intrigues and unites in equal measure. Where does this number come from? How did it become a worldwide gathering for cannabis enthusiasts? A look back at its origins and evolution to the present day.
The origins of 420: a code from California
It all began in the early 1970s in San Rafael, California. A group of teenagers known as “the Waldos” used to meet at 16h20 after school to smoke together near a statue of Louis Pasteur. Their code for arranging the meeting was: “420 Louis”.
Over time, the number 420 became synonymous with cannabis use within their circle before spreading throughout Californian culture thanks to musicians, particularly the band Grateful Dead, which was highly influential at the time.
From secret code to symbolic date
Over the years, 420 became a symbol shared far beyond California. 20 April (4/20 in the American format) established itself as World Cannabis Day. Around the world, peaceful gatherings are organised to celebrate the plant, advocate for decriminalisation and promote responsible use.
This movement helped make 20 April both an activist and festive date, marking one of the largest annual community events associated with cannabis.
A symbol of culture and freedom
Cannabis 420 is now a genuine cultural marker. It is no longer merely a time or a code shared by insiders, but an emblem of tolerance, conviviality and open-mindedness. In many countries, the date has become an opportunity to raise public awareness of the considered use of hemp and its many facets: well-being, ecology, innovation and craftsmanship.
420 in Switzerland: between openness and regulation
In Switzerland, hemp cultivation has a long tradition. Although recreational cannabis use remains regulated by law, legal CBD (THC < 1%) has found its place on the market. For many Swiss retailers and producers, 20 April is therefore an opportunity to highlight legal hemp and reaffirm its local and responsible roots.
